Turkish Conditionals with Examples [STEP-BY-STEP]

Conditionals are sentences that describe what happens under certain circumstances, often using the word “if.” In English, the structure of these sentences varies based on timing and likelihood. Turkish conditionals are formed by adding suffixes like “-se/-sa” to the verb.

Broadly speaking, conditionals cover cause and effect sentences (if clauses) – in present, future or past.

There are multiple turkish conditionals formed in different modes and tenses. We’ll be investigating them with details.

Çok kahve içersen, uyuyamazsın
If you drink too much coffee, you can’t sleep
Çok kahve içersem, uyuyamam

Hava kötüyse, evde kalırız (present)

If you prepared the food, I may (can) wash the dishes
Eğer yemeği annem hazırlamışsa, sen bulaşıkları yıkamalısın
If my mother prepared the food, you must wash the dishes
Bu benim sonumu getirecekse‚ bunu yapmam
lit. If this is going to bring my end, I wouldn’t do it
Eğer yapacaksa, bütün istediklerini yaparım
If s/he is going to do it, I’ll do whatever s/he wants

Gülüyorsam, mutluyum demek
If I am laughing, that means I am happy
Yapmıyorsak, bir sebebi var

Seni kırdıysa özür dilemeli

Unreal Conditional

1st part: -s(A) (conditional)
2nd part: -Ir/Ar (aorist) + dI (past tense)

If I (were to) win the lottery, I would quit my job now
Piyangoyu kazansam, işimi hemen bırakırdım

This sentence expresses that quitting the job is a hypothetical action (and it’s not that likely) that would have occurred if winning the lottery, another hypothetical event, had taken place.

Negative Unreal Conditional: NOT that unreal!

Tatile gitsem, çok para harcarım
If I go for holiday, I’d spend lots of money

If I don’t go for holiday, I’d get bored here so much

Unreal Past Conditional

Imagine situations from the past that didn’t happen. We use a special way in Turkish to talk about these. For example, “If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam.”

Unreal Past Conditional (Type 3)

-s(A) (conditional) + -ydI (past tense)

Unreal past:
If I had driven carefully
If I hadn’t eaten that last piece
If I were you (both present/past con.)
