Turkish for Erasmus & University Students (+ Audio)

Turkish for Erasmus and university students means being able to chat with classmates as easily as you can handle official conversations on campus. Below you'll hear two dialogues: two classmates getting to know each other before class, and a student asking an advisor about the Erasmus program. Listen to both, then work through the transcripts, grammar notes, and vocabulary.

Dialogue 1: Making Friends on Campus

Kemal: Pardon, ben ilk dersi kaçırdım da. Bilmem gereken bir şey var mı? Hoca dersin işleyişi hakkında önemli bir şey söyledi mi?
Esin: Hmm ben de geç geldim sınıfa. Bildiğim kadarıyla 2 tane vize olacak. Final tarihi henüz belli değil. Bir de bu arada iki tane ödev verilecekmiş.
Kemal: Devam zorunluluğu var mı?
Esin: Bildiğim kadarıyla yok ama dersler birbirini takip ettiği için “gelmezseniz geçemeyebilirsiniz” dedi hoca.
Kemal: Hmm. Peki ödev tarihleri belli mi?
Esin: Hayır, ödev verildiği ders, sınıfta olmak zorundasın. Eğer kaçırırsan ödevden de puan alamazsın maalesef.
Kemal: Yani, devam zorunluluğu yok ama var.
Esin: Evet, sanki biraz öyle.
Kemal: Bilmiyorum, istatistik dersini sevdiğim için geçebileceğimi düşünüyorum ama ders için çok zor diyorlar.
Esin: Ben de duydum ama bence çalışırsak geçeriz.
Kemal: Tabii, 22 kredim var bu dönem. Hangi derse çalışmalıyım bilmiyorum. Yeterince zaman yok maalesef.
Esin : Hmm… Evet, tabii.
Kemal: İsmim Kemal bu arada. Senin ismin ne?
Esin: Esin ben de. Memnun oldum.
Kemal: Ben de memnun oldum.
Esin: Hangi bölümdensin?
Kemal: Bilgisayar mühendisliği ama elektrik ve elektronik mühendisliğiyle çift anadal yapıyorum.
Esin: Şimdi anlaşıldı çok fazla dersinin olması…
Kemal: Senin bölümün ne?
Esin: Kimya mühendisliği.

Translation

Kemal: Sorry, I missed the first lesson. Is there anything I should know? Did the teacher say anything important about how the course will be conducted?
Esin: Hmm, I also came to the class late. As far as I know, there will be 2 visas, The final date is not yet clear. In the meantime, two homework assignments will be given.
Kemal: Is there compulsory attendance?
Esin: As far as I know, the lessons follow each other, “you may not pass if you do not come,” said the teacher.
Kemal: Hmm. So are the homework dates clear?
Esin: No, but you must attend the class the day homework is given. Unfortunately, you can not get any mark from homework if you miss it.
Kemal: So, there is no obligation to attend, but there is.

Kemal: I don’t know, I think I can pass because I love statistics lesson, but they say this course is very difficult.
Esin: I heard it, but I think we will pass if we study.

Öğrenci: Merhaba hocam. Müsait misiniz?
Danışman: Evet tabii. İçeri buyur.
Öğrenci: Erasmus hakkında bilgi almaya gelmiştim.
Danışman: İkinci sınıf öğrencisiydin değil mi?
Öğrenci: Evet, doğru.
Danışman: Dil sınavına girdin mi?
Öğrenci: Hayır henüz girmedim.
Danışman: Erasmus’a gitmek için ilk koşulumuz üniversitenin hali hazırda ilk yılını tamamlamış olmaktır. Sen de bunu yapıyorsun.
Öğrenci: Evet.
Danışman: Daha önce Erasmus’a katılmamış olman da gerekli. Fakat senin gitmediğini varsayıyorum.
Öğrenci: Hayır daha önce farklı bir ülkeye okumaya gitmedim.
Danışman: Çok güzel. Bir sonraki ve en önemli şartlarımızdan biri de gideceğin ülkenin öğretim dilini bilmek ki bu genelde İngilizce oluyor. Senin İngilizce dil bilgin hangi seviyede?
Öğrenci: İyi konuşup yazıyorum aynı zamanda anlayabiliyorum fakat kendimi hiç ölçmedim.
Danışman: Anlıyorum. Erasmus’a gidebilmek için İngilizce dil bilgini ölçen bir sınav yapıyoruz.

Danışman: Bu sınav her sene tekrarlanıyor. Bu sene bir sonraki ay yapılacak istersen katılabilirsin.

Student : I came to learn about Erasmus.
Counselor : You were a second year student, right?
Student : Yes, it’s true.
Consultant : Did you take the language exam?
Student : No, I haven’t entered it yet.
Consultant : Let me start explaining from the beginning. Our first condition to go to Erasmus is to have completed the first year of the university. You do it too.
Student : Yes.
Consultant : You must also have not joined the Erasmus (Program) before. But I assume that you have not gone.
Student : No, I haven’t been to a different country before in order to study.
Consultant : Very good. One of our next and most important conditions is to know the language of the country you are going to, which is usually English. What level of English language do you have?
