Fruits and Vegetables in Turkish: Vocab + Dialogue

Tasting local fruits and vegetables is one of the most fun activities to do in a foreign country. Compare to going to Pazar, shopping in Manav (grocery store) can be a little bit more expensive but you can find organic and exported fruits and vegetables any time of the week.

Müşteri: Kış mevsiminde yetişen her bir meyveden istiyorum. Mevsiminde yetiştikleri için eminim daha sağlıklıdırlar. Bunları çocuklarıma yedirmek istiyorum.
Manav: Kesinlikle haklısınız. O zaman size ayva, elma, mandalina, nar, portakal ya da kivi verebilirim. Hepsi kış meyvesidir.
Müşteri: Tamam o zaman şöyle olsun: 5 adet ayva ve 1 kilo elma.
Manav: Peki. 5 adet ayva az değil mi?
Müşteri: Evet az fakat çocuklarım çok sevmiyor.
Manav: Mandalina?
Müşteri: Onu severler. O 1 kilo olsun.

Manav: Yanlış hatırlamıyorsam sebze de istemiştiniz değil mi?
Müşteri: Evet hangileri mevsimlik?
Manav: Hmm. Brokoli, ıspanak, havuç, kabak, soğan, lahana, patates, mantar, salatalık, sarımsak…
Müşteri: Ne kadar da fazla. Hmm o zaman bir kilo salatalık alayım.
Manav: Tabii buyurun.
Müşteri: Bir de iki adet sarımsak.
Manav: Başka bir isteğiniz var mı?
Müşteri: Aslında hepsini almak isterdim fakat halihazırda çok şey aldım. Hepsini birden evime taşıyamam.
Manav: Keşke yardımcı olabilseydim.
Müşteri: Sorun yok nasıl olsa evim burada. Yarın yine uğrar sebzelerinizden alırım.
Manav: Evet bu sizin için daha kolay olur.
Müşteri: Çok teşekkür ederim. Şimdi eve gidip yemek yapayım. Size iyi satışlar..
Manav: Rica ederim. Yine bekleriz.

Translation

Customer: I want all the fruits that grow in winter. I am sure they are healthier as they grow in the season. I want to feed my children with them.
Greengrocer: You are absolutely right. Then I can give you quince, apple, tangerine, pomegranate, orange or kiwi. All of them are winter fruits.
Customer: Okay, so let’s do it like this: 5 quinces and 1 kilo of apple.
Greengrocer: Okay, 5 quinces is not little?
Customer: Yes, but my children do not like it very much.
Greengrocer: Tangerine?
Customer: They love it. Get that 1 kilo.
Greengrocer: Okay. Would you like pomegranate or orange?
Customer: No pomegranate. It is very difficult to clean, but half a kilo of orange can be.
Greengrocer: and Kiwi is left.
Customer: Let me get half a kilo of it.
Greengrocer: If I remember correctly, you asked for vegetables, right?

Taze is used as an adverb here.

Be careful that in Turkish, you don’t use plural suffix if it’s indicated with a number at the beginning. “5 ayvalar” is completely incorrect in Turkish.

Temizlemek in this sentence is for pomegranate. “Nar temizlemek” means to take out the seeds of the pomegranate, not cleaning it.
