Showing Your Family Photo Album to Your Friend

Who do you resemble in your family? In Turkey, it’s believed that girls resemble their paternal aunt (hala) whereas boys resemble their paternal uncle (amca). In this dialogue, you’ll learn how to say “who do you look like in your family” or “I look like my mother”.

Erkek: Bana biraz ailenden bahseder misin? Onları merak ediyorum.
Kız: Tabii ki. Gel sana fotoğraf albümümüzü göstereyim. Görünce daha iyi anlarsın.
Erkek: Evet bu benim için daha kolay olur. Hadi bakalım.
Kız: Bu ilk fotoğraftaki küçük kız benim. Yanımdaki kıvırcık saçlı kadın da annem.
Erkek: Ne kadar da benziyorsunuz! Annen bu fotoğrafta kaç yaşındaydı?
Kız: Annem bu fotoğrafta yirmi üç (23) yaşındaydı. Şimdi ise kırk (40) yaşında.
Erkek: Peki bu ikinci fotoğraftaki adam kim?
Kız: Bu fotoğraftaki uzun boylu adam da benim babam. Görünüş olarak ona da biraz benziyorum.
Erkek: Evet haklısın benziyorsun. Annenin ve babanın mesleği ne?
Kız: Annem öğretmen, babam ise ticaret yapıyor.
Erkek: Kardeşlerinin olduğunu söylemiştin. Onların da fotoğrafı var mı?
Kız: Evet, bak bunlar da benim kardeşlerim. Bir de iki büyük abim var. Toplam beş kardeşiz. Kardeşlerim sırasıyla yirmi bir(21), on yedi(17), dokuz(9) ve sekiz(8) yaşındalar. Ben de on beş(15) yaşındayım. Küçük kardeşlerim ilkokula gidiyor. Bir abim liseye öteki abim ise üniversiteye gidiyor.
Erkek: Fotoğraftaki annene benzeyen kadın teyzen mi?
Kız: Evet doğru bildin. İkisi birbirine çok benziyorlar. İkisi de kumral ve kıvırcık saçlı kadınlar. Bu özelliklerini dedemden almışlardır.

Translation

Man: Can you tell me a little about your family? I’m curious about them.
Girl: Of course. Let me show you our photo album. You will understand better when you see it.
Man: Yes, this will be easier for me. Here you go.
Girl: I’m the little girl in this first photo. The woman with the curly hair next to me is my mother.
Man: How much you look like each other! How old was your mother in this photo?
Girl: My mom was twenty-three (23) years old in this photo. Now he is forty (40) years old.
Man: So who is the man in this second photo?
Girl: The tall man in this photo is my father. I look a bit like him in appearance.
Man: Yeah you’re right, you look like. What is your mom’s and dad’s job?
Girl: My mother is a teacher and my father is doing business.
Man: You said you had siblings. Do they have a photo too?
Girl: Yeah, look, these are my brothers. I also have two older brothers. We are a total of five brothers. My brothers are twenty one (21), seventeen (17), nine (9) and eight (8) years old respectively. I am fifteen (15) years old. My little brothers are going to primary school. One brother goes to high school and the other brother goes to university.
Man: Is the woman similar to your mother in the photo your Aunt (maternal aunt)?
Girl: Yeah you got it right. The two are very similar. They are both brown and curly hair women. They took these characteristics from my grandfather.
