Getting to Asian Side By Ferry

Half of Istanbul lies in Europe and the other part lies in Asia. Thousands of people travel through Bosphorus every day by the historical ferries. As the boat takes off, Istanbul’s vast landscape gradually unfolds in front of you while the seagulls chase the boat in search of food.

Erkek: Pardan, biz Anadolu yakasına geçmek istiyoruz. Nasıl gidebiliriz acaba?
Kadın: Tabii. Marmaray’la mı geçmek istiyorsunuz yoksa vapurla mı?
Erkek: Vapurla.
Kadın: Beşiktaş iskelesi buraya daha yakın. İlk önce Beşiktaş’a gitmeniz lazım. Akbiliniz var mı?
Erkek: Akbil ne?
Kadın: Akbil toplu taşıma kullanmak için gerekli kart. Ama önemli değil, vapur iskelesinde alabilirsiniz.
Erkek: Çok güzel.
Kadın: Peki neden Marmaray’ı tercih etmiyorsunuz? Metro istasyonu buraya vapur iskelesinden daha yakın.
Erkek: Evet ama açık havada olmamız gerekiyor. Çünkü benim klostrofobim var.
Kadın: Ah.. Anladım. Yalnız biraz çabuk olmanız gerekiyor. Çünkü saat 8 ve son vapur 8 buçukta kalkıyor.
Erkek: Peki. Sağ olun. Biz o zaman bir taksi bulalım.
Kadın: İlk önce karşıya geçmeniz gerekiyor.
Erkek: Evet, doğru söylüyorsunuz. Teşekkürler.
Kadın: Rica ederim. İyi günler.

Translation

Man: Excuse me, we want to cross to the Anatolian side. How can we go?
Woman: Sure. Do you want to cross by Marmaray or by ferry?
Man: By ferry.
Woman: Beşiktaş pier is closer here. First you have to go to Beşiktaş. Do you have Akbil?
Man: What is akbil?
Woman: Akbil is the card required to use public transportation. But it doesn’t matter, you can get it on the ferry port.
Man: It’s beautiful.
Woman: So why don’t you prefer Marmaray? The metro station is closer here than the ferry port.
Man: Yes, but we need to be outdoors. Because I have claustrophobia.
Woman: Ah .. I get it. You just have to be a little quick. Because it’s 8 o’clock and the last ferry leaves at half past 8.
Man: Okay. Thanks. Let’s find a taxi then.
Woman: You have to cross the road first.
Man: Yes, you are right. Thanks.
Woman: You’re welcome. Have a nice day.

Grammar Notes

The last three noun compounds have -I at the end of the second words. As well as,

Istanbul has two parts; one is in Asia (which we call Anadolu Yakası) and the other one is in Europe (which we call Avrupa Yakası). Daily transportation in between is supplied by ferries, Marmaray (metro under the Bosphorus), metrobüs and vehicular traffic through the 3 different bridges: Fatih Sultan Mehmet Köprüsü, Yavuz Sultan Selim Köprüsü, 15 Temmuz Şehitler Köprüsü (formerly Boğaziçi Köprüsü).

“Karşıya geçmek” means going from European Side to Anatolian Side or vice versa for Istanbulians.
