If you are not familiar with the city, it might be really difficult to find your way back home or hotel. But if you speak some Turkish and can ask help from a native, you’ll find out that they are happy to explain. In the dialogue, you’ll hear two people trying to find the most convenient route.

Turist: Burası yanlış sokak …Hmm. Pardon… bir şey sorabilir miyim?
Yerli: Tabii, buyurun.
Turist: Ben Taksim’e gitmek istiyorum. Nasıl gidebilirim?
Yerli: Ah evet. Taksiyle mi? Metroyla mı? Otobüsle mi?
Turist: Bilmiyorum. Fark etmez.
Yerli: Peki… 100 metre ileride metro var. Metroyla çok hızlı gidebilirsiniz.
Turist: Ah nerede bilet alabilirim?
Yerli: Metro istasyonunda makinelerden nakitle alabilirsiniz.
Turist: Bilet ne kadar?
Yerli: Bir şey değil… 2-3 lira.
Turist: Peki. Taksiyle daha hızlı, değil mi?
Yerli: Evet. Taksiyle daha hızlı ve daha rahat tabii. Ama trafik olabilir. Dikkat edin.
Turist: Taksiyle ne kadar?
Yerli: Zannediyorum 20-25 lira arası.
Turist: Tamam, teşekkür ederim. Taksiyle gitmek istiyorum. ATM nerede biliyor musunuz?
Yerli: Maalesef bilmiyorum.

Translation

Tourist: This is the wrong street … Sorry … Can I ask something?
Native: Sure.
Tourist: I want to go to Taksim. How can I go?
Native: Oh yes. By taxi? By subway? By bus?
Tourist: I don’t know. It does not matter.
Local: Well… There is a metro 100 meters away. You can go very quickly by metro.
Tourist: Oh where can I buy tickets?
Domestic: You can get the tickets with cash from the machines at the metro station.
Tourist: How much is the ticket?
Native: Nothing .. 2-3 liras.
Tourist: Okay. It’s faster by taxi, right?
Native: Yes. Of course, faster and more comfortable by taxi. But there may be traffic. Be careful.
Tourist: How much is it by taxi?
Domestic: I guess between 20-25 lira.
Tourist: Okay, thank you. I want to go by taxi. Do you know where the ATM is?
Native: Unfortunately, I do not know.

Can he ask something?

This structure -Abil can be translated as “Can” or “May” (Modals) into English. You use it when asking permission, expressing your abilities, or requesting something. It’s covered in detail in the “Video: Abilities” lesson.

Metro istasyonu” is a phrase consisting of two parts which are both nouns (metro and istasyon). “Metro istasyonu” is a noun compound. The second word in noun compounds takes the suffix -I at the end. In this case, it is Metro istasyonu.
