Lesson: Buying Meds in Pharmacy – Audio

You can obtain various drugs in pharmacies without prescriptions. Knowing how to say “painkiller”, “medication” or “pill” can be useful during your time in Turkey. For the drugs that require a special prescription, you may need to see a doctor and explain your problems, hopefully in Turkish.

Customer: Hello, I have a terrible flu, can you recommend a medicine to me?
Pharmacist: Sure, sir. Does your throat hurt?
Customer: Yes, it has been sore for three days and I have been coughing a lot now. So much that it wakes me from my sleep at night and I can’t easily fall asleep.
Pharmacist: So let’s give you a pain reliever and antipyretic drug. And pastil for your throat. Please take this medicine on a full stomach after dinner. You can use the pastil whenever your throat hurts.
Customer: So can I use this medicine more than once a day?
Pharmacist: Yes sir, but be careful to have 8 hours between.
Customer: So what is the active ingredient of the drug?
Pharmacist: Paracetamol sir/ma’am. It is a mild medicine. If your disease progresses, I suggest you go to a doctor. These medications allow you to get over the disease more easily. So it is not therapeutic. It only relieves symptoms.
Customer: So are there any side effects? My stomach is very sensitive.
Pharmacist: No, there isn’t. But be careful not to take it with alcohol.
Customer: So can I drive after taking this medicine?
Pharmacist: Of course, sir.
Customer: I understand, thank you very much. How much did they all cost?
Pharmacist: Did you have health insurance?
Customer: Sorry, no.
Pharmacist: It all costs 24 lira.
Customer: Here you go. Thank you.
Pharmacist: Get well soon.
